When I am approached by a publisher to review a book they typically provide a single copy that I review and give-away. Frances Lincoln Limited provided two, one for you and one for me,
am I ever glad.
Author Ian Hodgson wrote THE book that every gardener will want....and need, including this landscape designer.
This book presents more than 300 of the best garden designs of the last ten years from 50 top garden designers, the top British designers. But Mr. Hodgson also sought out the work of lesser-known designers whose innovating designs deserve wider recognition. As a fellow member of the Society of Garden Designers (British), he is in the company of the best of the bestThe process of garden design requires many thousands of small decisions in pursuit of the most appealing solutions for outdoor spaces and this tome makes that complex process simpler by offering step-by-step considerations that are both doable and within your budget constraints
One is guided effectively and imaginatively through the process
Planting styles
Ornamentation
Lighting
Fire
Ideas for children
Supporting wildlife
HardscapesImaginative mulch. With all the cones that drop here makes this within my realm of possibility
How to do all of the above and so much more by yourself or how to hire a garden designer
Trust me, this should be in every gardener's library, the how to's and the inspiration photo's are fresh and exciting. Thank you Ian Hodgson!
Had to include today's photo, my beloved Cooper enjoying a spring day

This book looks fabulous! And might I say that the pine cone mulch is fabulous! I need to try this!
ReplyDeleteDebra,
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing book. I'm uncertain as to my garden progress this year with this punishing drought we're experiencing but this could be an elixir to planning for the time when the drought ends! Cooper is a magazine worthy handsome fellow! :-)
xo,
Karen

ReplyDeleteDebra,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely book. Thanks for all your inspiring posts and beautiful photos.

Looks like a great read. I have been struggling with my garden design these past couple of years, as this is my first attempt. There is a lot of information out there, but bringing it all together in a meaningful way is difficult.
ReplyDeleteThis lfans fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a wonderful book. Cooper is extra cute!
ReplyDeleteThis beautiful book will be one I purchase if I don't win your give away. My garden has finally awakened to spring in the northern Shenandoah Valley.
ReplyDeleteI do need inspiration! Looks fantastic! Thanks for the opportunity! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Debra,
ReplyDeletewith our never ending drought, I'm not sure what our garden will look like by the fall. We're just going to focus on sustaining trees and shrubs. This book certainly looks inspiring!
Thanks!, barbara
I already have a great pine cone collection (thanks to my little boys).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
P.S. Cooper is adorable, but he looks like he's saying 'throw the Frisbee and stop pointing that thing at me.'
ReplyDeletehow right you are carolyn!! but....he has a ruptured disc and i cannot throw anything for him = one miserable pooch!

This has a picture of one of my favorite mosaic walkways. Poor Cooper!
ReplyDeleteI have been working on my garden for seven years now. It it still a work in progress but now that I'm retired I have time to devote to creating an oasis. I agree - everyone should have this one in their library. I would be ever so happy to add it to mine. The hours I would spend absorbing the details and deciding what I can use or adapt to my relatively small yard.
ReplyDeleteDebra, this couldn't have come at a better time. I have been mending my soil and laying landscape fabric all week with no specific plans and an open canvas. This may be the idea starter I need to read until, did you say May 15th?
ReplyDeleteThe pictures you've shown are wonderful. I love how the British use meticulous design to produce something that looks like it's happened naturally.
ReplyDeleteyes margie, in zone 5, plant after may 15th, our last frost date. have fun!!!

Debra,
ReplyDeleteThis book looks like something that should be enjoyed with a glass of Chardonnay, a comfy outdoor chair and drenched in the light of the golden sunset.

ReplyDeleteWhat a marvelous book, love the pinecones-as-mulch idea. I'd be delighted to have that book in my library.
ReplyDeleteLike the clean designs.
ReplyDeleteLooks a lovely inspirational book, I find my lack of will power against impulse garden purchases is the enemy of my garden design plans so far, but I am a beginner. I've joined some garden clubs though, so I'm hoping to learn.
ReplyDeleteWould love to add to my Garden Muse
ReplyDeleteYour post and the book's photos have inspired me to hire a garden designer. 😊

Hi Debra, I just now found you and LOVE your blogs and pictures. I have designed my garden and just now implimenting the plans; to be done in stages due to both weather and budget. I live in a desert area in the U.S. and have to deal with 115 degree heat in the summer and 7" of rain a year. This book looks fabulous! The pinecone mulch won't work here, but I am sure there is a plethora of ideas I can use. I am looking forward to seeing/reading more of your work. BTW, Cooper sure is a cutie!!! My fur baby Lacy (Dalmatian) also loves to sun herself in the back yard/garden when the weather allows.
